COALINGA

PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL COMMUNITY TRAINING

CEC coordinates and offers community training in order to assist location community members with their personal and professional goals.  At this time, training is being offered in the following areas:

  • Plaza Comunitaria (Education in Spanish from Literacy to Secondary Educational Levels) in partnership with the Fresno County Mexican Consulate
  • Conversational English
  • Parenting in partnership with Fresno County
  • General Education Diploma (GED) in partnership with SER Jobs for Progress
  • Vocational English as a Second Language (VESL) in partnership with West Hills College
  • Basic Computer Skills (Internet, Word, and Excel)
  • Community Involvement and Leadership Development

YOUTH LEADERSHIP

CEC is currently sponsoring the Coalinga Youth Council that assists local youth with community service training in the areas of design, partnership development, resource assessments, planning, and project implementation skills.

YOUTH ACTIVITIES

Throughout the academic school year CEC partners with Pleasant Valley Christian Center and Coalinga-Huron Parks & Recreation District to provide after school and holiday arts, crafts, and activities for community youth.  In addition, during the summer months CEC provides a food services and activities Summer Program for youth in Olsen Park from 11-1 p.m. in partnership with EOC.

CULTURAL ARTS

CEC currently has youth folkloric dance classes offered by Dolores Carrillo at West Hills Community College on a weekly basis.  Upcoming performances will be:

  • April 26th, Keck Park in Coalinga from 6-7 p.m.
  • April 27th, Keenan Park in Huron from 4-5 p.m.
  • May 2nd, West Hills College in Coalinga from 12-1 p.m.
  • May 3rd, West Hills College in Coalinga from 12-1 p.m.
  • May 4th, Keck Park in Coalinga from 4-5 p.m.

FIVE POINTS

COMMUNITY HOUSING

WHEN has been working on community housing rehabilitation, reconstruct, or new development efforts on behalf of the local residents since 2003.  WHEN received a land donation from O’Neill Farming in 2003 and is currently working with 16 Single Family Residence (SFRs) and 13 Mobile Home Pads at Excelsior and Highway 33.  Partnerships and funding are being sought in order to upgrade and/or rebuild these housing facilities that were originally built in the 1940s and rehabilitated in the 1970s.

FIVE POINTS BUSINESS BEAUTIFICATION PROJECT

From 2007-2008 WHEN, in partnership with Fresno County and USDA Rural Development, will be working on a 5 business beautification project in the community of Five Points.  Business facades and sign are being provided for eligible businesses in order to improve this economic crossroads at Highways 269 and 33.  All businesses will receive updated design ideas that provide a common color scheme and project concept, enabling the community to update their business area for future investments in the area.

HURON

  • Plaza Comunitaria (Education in Spanish from Literacy to Secondary Educational Levels) in partnership with the Fresno County Mexican Consulate
  • Citizenship in partnership with Coalinga-Huron Unified School District
  • Parenting
  • Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced Computer Skills (Keyboarding, Internet, Word, and Excel) in partnership with Toltec Media
  • Community Involvement and Leadership Development

YOUTH LEADERSHIP

HEC is currently sponsoring the Huron Youth Council that assists local youth with community service training in the areas of design, partnership development, resource assessments, planning, and project implementation skills.

DISTANCE LEARNING AND TECHNOLOGY CENTER

HEC is currently working with West Hills College, California State University of Fresno, and the University of California in Berkeley to offer distance learning classes within this rural, isolated community.  Classes are offered in Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters.

DOWNTOWN BEAUTIFICATION PROJECT

From 2004-2007 HEC, in partnership with the City of Huron and West Hills College, worked on a 49 business beautification project in the community of Huron.  Business facades and sign were provided for eligible businesses in order to improve this economic corridor along Lassen Avenue/Highway 269.  All businesses received Early California design ideas that blended in common color schemes to enable the community to provide a common theme throughout their business district and assist with business investments for the area.

TULE RIVER

VOCATIONAL TRAINING

Tule River Economic Development Corporation is diligently working with the local Tule River Indian Tribe, Porterville Community College, and the City of Porterville to provide local residents with aircraft vocational training opportunities.  At this time, training is being developed for the following areas:

  • Upholstery
  • Paint
  • Piloting

TRAINING CENTER  

 

 

From 2004-2008 TREDC, in partnership with HUD Rural Housing and Economic Development (RHED), has been working on the development of a training facility to offer vocational training in the areas of aircraft maintenance, services, and chartering.
